Herbal Spotlight: Lavender (And Giveaway Winner!)

When I think of lavender I think of relaxation. After a long day I will often use a lavender shower disk to let that wonderful relaxing scent melt away my stress. However, this amazing herb has so much more to offer!

What Is It?

Lavender gets its name from the Latin “lavare” which means “to wash.”It grows as a short shrub with vibrant green shoots. The flowers are typically  blue, violet or lilac and form in close clusters. The oil in the flowers are what give lavender its wonderful scent – which is also the oil that is used to make lavender essential oils which have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Lavender can be used in many ways depending on what your intending to treat. Here are some common uses:

For Headaches: When I feel a headache coming I will take some lavender essential oil and rub it on my temples or the back of my neck and it usually does the trick.

For Acne: You lavender and witch-hazel to reduce inflammation and increase healing of acne breakouts and scars.

  1. WOW!!! I am so excited to have won the give-away!!!!! What a great way to start out the new year :0)
    I use lavender daily in my home. I scent my sheets with it every night so that I have a great sleep and use it regularly in my bath and laundry. I have fibromyalgia and it helps with the anxiety and the aches and pains that go with it.

  2. I have little canvas bags and I like to fill them with dried lavender and soothing herbs and put them inside the top side of my pillow, really helps with insomnia and is really relaxing!
