DIY: Facial Toner

Your skin is delicate. Maybe not quite like a rose, but it does need to be cared for, especially your face. I have a simple recipe that is easy on the wallet and kind to your face.

You may be wondering, is a facial toner really necessary?

Well, I’ve gone most of my adult life not using toner. I don’t think it is required, but I do notice a difference when I use toner versus not using it. If you have particularly oily skin, you may find it more helpful. If you have super dry skin, maybe this isn’t for you. But you can tweak the recipe to fit your skin type needs, and you will find a happy solution.

The basics of the recipe can be purchased individually and used as needed throughout the house for your other DIY projects. So don’t fret; you aren’t just buying useless, one-time ingredients. I generally purchase my bulk stuff from Mountain Rose Herbs. I like their corporate philosophy and their products.

If you are not interested in making your own facial toner, try an all-natural premade option like Earthley’s Tone Me! {Revitalizing Facial Toner}!

Facial Toner

Ingredients:

I generally use lavender and frankincense. If you have sensitive skin, this combination might work well for you. If you have super dry skin, you may consider neroli (a little pricier, but you can also use this as a delicious perfume) and frankincense. You can combine lavender and sandalwood or ylang ylang and sandalwood for oily skin. Again, if you have an oil that works best for you, test that in a small batch. You can always change the recipe.

Note: Some oils may be excellent for oily skin, such as bergamont or lemon, but I will caution use against them if you spend time outside. They are photo-sensitizing and may amplify the sun’s effect on your skin. The whole purpose here is to create something gentle for your face.

Directions:

Step 1: Wash and sterilize the container and top where you plan to store the final product (you can boil for 15 minutes and allow it to completely dry). You don’t want water particles contaminating your mixture.

Step 2: Measure 6 ounces of witch hazel into your container.

Step 3: Add ¾ tablespoon of the aloe vera gel and 2 drops of your preferred essential oils.

Step 4: Shake vigorously to ensure everything combines well.

You can squirt the mixture onto a soft face towel or cotton ball and wipe down your face. I normally do it in the evening after I wash my face. It is amazing how much makeup is left after washing *and when I wake up in the morning)!

What have you made especially for your face? Is there a particular essential oil combination that works best for you?
