DIY: Earache Oil

We don’t deal with earaches too often.  In fact, our oldest two have had one, both at age 4.  Our oldest had one miserable night because of it (no pain until 10 PM and not much to do until the next day — plus we didn’t know much then).  Our second woke with the beginnings of an ear infection at nap time, and we immediately nipped that one in the bud.

First, a trip to the chiropractor to get the ear to drain.  Within seconds of adjusting, he quit complaining about the ear and ran off to play.  The chiropractor pulled at his ear gently and tugged it to help it open.  He’s done it to me, too, when I had an ear infection beginning, and the fluid ran down my throat after this.  Since that’s what’s causing the pain — the fluid that can’t drain — it basically clears up the infection.

But there’s often still some residual redness, irritation, etc.  To clear that up quickly, we use this oil.  It’s become a staple in our home over the years — just in case!  Of course, if you’re not into DIYs, Earthley’s Earache Ease is a great pre-made option!

DIY: Earache Oil

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 tbsp. mullein leaves

Directions:

Step 1: Combine all ingredients in a small mason jar; put a lid on it.

Step 2: Place the jar into a small saucepan with water at least halfway up the sides of the jar (but not too full).

Step 3: Simmer on medium heat for 3 – 4 hours.  (You can skip the heating step and let it sit in a cabinet for 4 – 6 weeks).

Step 4: Strain it out very carefully, using cloth.  You don’t want any piece of garlic or mullein at all in the finished product.

Step 5: Store in a dark glass jar with a dropper for easy use.

To use: Place a few drops in the affected ear as the person lies on their side.  Allow this to sit for 5 – 10 minutes, then sit up and use a cloth against the ear while the oil drains.  Repeat as needed.

Do not use it if the eardrum has ruptured (or you think it might have).
